Maybe you’re even flirting with the idea of sailing or boating to a tropical location, taking a long, leisurely vacation with your loved ones.
But how confident are you really behind that steering wheel? And are you able to find your way to your destination through good weather and bad? Sure, there’s always GPS units, but more often than not technology fails the further out you get away from shore. Do you really want to take a chance with your friends’ and family’s safety on the water?
…you’re in the right place.
With this course, you’ll have the skills you need to be safe on the water knowing you can charter your own boat for a day, a weekend, a vacation, or embark on a full-on career on the water by working towards a Captain’s License.
I’m on a mission to promote seamanship and safe boating practices for sailors and professional mariners through education and certification. I’ve spent the last 15+ years dedicated to cruising distant harbors on the Great Lakes as well as sailboat racing during overnight regattas crossing Lake Michigan. I hold a USCG 100 ton Master Near Coastal captain’s license and encourage sailing education and safety. I’ve enjoyed sharing my expertise to promote sailing at several organizations from the East Coast to the MidWest, and have been trained as a first responder while maintaining first aid and CPR certifications.
My entire reason for creating this online course is to help boaters develop practical literacy of traditional paper charts and incorporating the use of marine electronics like GPS and chart plotters. Many people are already using electronic navigation but don’t have a backup system when their electronics fail shortly after they leave dry land. Having a book of charts, like a chart kit, and knowing the basic process of reading a chart, is the best way to get back to the dock after your marine electronics bite the dust. Keeping an hourly log that records your position and using your GPS record from your last known position on a chart is a great backup and will be a great help to the Coast Guard if you ever need to call for help, or find yourself in a sticky situation.
“Learning coastal navigation is invaluable. Since taking this course we have successfully navigated our boat through all the Great Lakes, Canada, and beyond the eastern seaboard. Without the complete knowledge of Coastal Navigation Pro it would all be a guessing game, particularly on overnight Atlantic Ocean voyages. I highly recommend this course.”
“Your class was so much help, there is no way I would have wanted to try any of this myself. I have and would recommend this class to anyone studying to get their Captain’s license, or wants knowledge of charting, or any other navigation-related skills. I just wanted to thank you so much for all your help getting my Captain's license and hope to see you on the water.”
“I really enjoyed learning the art and skill of coastal navigation using this training program. Learning here is supportive of your sailing goals and dreams. I have definitely improved this season, and look forward to continued learning from any new courses.”
“Captain Don takes the time to provide clear explanations with real world examples so that students not only retain critical information, but truly understand the importance of it. Their expertise and experience will always guide you to your true north long after the classroom. ”
